In a week were the Scottish Conservatives have called for school children to be given the right to outdoor education, Merrylee Primary School have shown that they are 'leaps and bounds' ahead of Scotland's politicians.

Over two days,  Monday 19th and Wednesday 21st May, the entire school was taken to Auchengillan Scout Camp  to participate in a full day of exciting outdoor activities which were educational, challenging and fun.

The trip was intended to enhance the pupils' health week experience, organised by Mrs. Colette Haddock,Principal Teacher, as well as being a terrific end of session social outing for all classes. The pupils enjoyed an extended day together rock-climbing, orienteering, enjoying parachute games, team building challenges, on the bouncy castle and gyro-carting!

Headteacher Mrs. Liz Mahindru said, " The trips were a great success offering all pupils fabulous opportunities to try new activities, develop team work and enjoy a great day learning outdoors in the beautiful Scottish countryside. The success of the venture was further enhanced by the large number of parents who also participated in the fun!"

Merrylee Primary has also been selected to take part in the new WOW (Walk Once a Week) initiative to promote safe and healthy ways to travel to school. The aim is to encourage pupils to walk, cycle or scooter to school at least once a week. Each pupil will receive a postcard to chart their own walking and successful pupils will receive a metal pin badge each month.

This also linked in to 'Walk to School Week' which took place on 12-16 May.

Just to prove, as if proof were needed, that the health and fitness focus of Merrylee Primary is paying off, two P6 pupils have just qualified for the finals of Glasgow Athletics Championships at Linwood Sports Centre to take place on Friday 13th June. The two boys, Stewart Neil  (80 metre sprint) and Rob Gourley (600 metre race) , qualified at the heats held in Linwood Sports centre on Thursday 15th May 2008.
